Review: "Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty" is a masterful redemption arc

The launch of Cyberpunk 2077 will forever be studied as one of the most disastrous in gaming history. However, with the release of the 2.0 update and the Phantom Liberty expansion, CD Projekt Red has executed a redemption arc that rivals No Man's Sky. The overhaul of the perk system, police AI, and vehicular combat transforms Night City into the dynamic, dangerous playground we were promised years ago. But the real star here is the expansion's narrative, which abandons the street-kid hustle of the base game for a high-stakes, deeply cynical political spy thriller.

Set in Dogtown, a walled-off, sovereign combat zone run by a ruthless militia, the expansion forces V into a deadly game of espionage to save the President of the NUSA. The writing here is exceptionally sharp. Idris Elba brings immense gravitas to Solomon Reed, an aging sleeper agent whose blinding loyalty to his country makes him incredibly dangerous. The dichotomy between Reed and Songbird, a brilliant netrunner desperately trying to escape her corporate shackles, forces the player into agonizing moral dilemmas where there are absolutely no good choices.

While the new relic skill tree feels slightly underdeveloped compared to the massive overhauls of the base abilities, Dogtown itself is a masterclass in level design. It is claustrophobic, vertically dense, and visually stunning, heavily utilizing ray-tracing to make its neon-soaked slums look breathtaking. The multiple endings of the expansion are emotionally devastating, cementing Phantom Liberty as a narrative triumph that finally solidifies Cyberpunk 2077 as a modern RPG classic.
