Review: "The Last of Us" Season 1 breaks the video game curse

As a hardcore fan who has replayed the game at least five times, I was terrified of this adaptation. Hollywood has a terrible record of ruining video games by misunderstanding what made them great. HBO did not just break the video game adaptation curse; it shattered it, set it on fire, and gave us prestige television.

Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey are Joel and Ellie. Their chemistry is perfect, and doubts about Bella's casting vanished by episode two. Episode three completely derailed me: taking a minor, action-heavy section from the game and turning it into a beautiful, heartbreaking hour-long love story about finding purpose in the apocalypse was a stroke of genius.

The series expands the lore in all the right places—fungal networks and the 1960s Jakarta opening—while staying faithful to the brutal, unforgiving tone. The clickers are horrifying and the practical effects are disgusting in the best way, but the show never loses its core: a story about grief, trauma, and the lengths a parent will go to protect a child. The hospital finale left me as hollow and conflicted as the game did in 2013.
